A bathtub lift can make independent living, and bathing, a reality. The use of bathtub lifts enable the handicapped, elderly or otherwise infirm to conveniently, confidently, safely and easily lower themselves into a bathtub and enjoy a bath in their own tub. They are a less expensive alternative to replacing a tub with a handicap tub.

Bathtub lifts fit most standard bathtubs and have a universal design that enables them to be easily installed in the home. There are different models that fit different sizes of tubs. The standard size lifts fit regular tubs and there are models available for deeper bathtubs.

Most bathtub lifts are chairs that attach to the tub and raise and lower to allow a person to comfortably settle themselves down into their home bathtub. With a compact frame and lightweight components, these lifts offer strength without bulk and safety without compromise. Most designs have powerful suction cup feet on them to keep them steady in the tub. They can be installed within a matter of minutes, usually, and are easy to remove and store out of the way for those times when they are not needed.

Compared to a walk in bathtub, which will usually cost upwards of $3000, good quality bathtub lifts are generally between $400 and $1,000. Sometimes medical insurance will even cover the purchase of a bathtub lift, so one should always check with their insurance provider to see if they will cover the expense.

Bathtub lifts are battery powered and can lower a person smoothly to the bottom of the tub to allow the bather full access to the tub, submerging them in the water and granting them plenty of legroom as well. This can greatly reduce strain on knees, hips, shoulders and ankles. A bathtub lift can significantly reduce the risk of falls in the tub, which is one of the leading causes of broken bones among the elderly and infirm.

Some models of bathtub lifts allow the user to recline. This lets the bather comfortably dip back into the tub to wash their hair without getting soap in their eyes. It also allows the bather to recline in the warm water for a comfortable, and muscle-relaxing soak. Afterward, it enables them to easily return to the seated position and when finished, to smoothly and comfortably elevate back up to the top of the tub to step out of it safely.

Bathtub lifts can be a great investment in safety and security for anyone who needs a little assistance in getting in and out of the tub and allows those who not ready to give up their independent bathing the chance to maintain their independence and dignity.
